Job Description

The NICU Unit Manager is responsible for providing strong clinical leadership, managing daily operations, and ensuring high-quality care for critically ill newborns. Key duties include staff supervision and mentorship, coordinating patient flow, ensuring compliance with best practices, supporting families, overseeing financial aspects (including Capex), and implementing evidence-based care pathways.

This role requires exceptional clinical expertise, leadership skills, and effective communication to deliver safe, high-paced, and patient-centered care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Deliver expert clinical care, assess and manage patient needs, and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
  • Coordinate patient transfers and provide health education and support.

Professional Standards & Compliance

  • Adhere to DHA guidelines and hospital policies.
  • Maintain evidence-based practice, confidentiality, and high standards of care.
  • Participate in audits, incident reporting, and continuous quality improvement.

Leadership & Team Support

  • Act as a resource for junior staff, offering guidance and mentorship.
  • Support hospital strategies and uphold values of equality, diversity, and respect for cultural and personal beliefs.

Qualifications

  • a Master’s Degree or Post graduate qualification (preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years in a senior NICU role (preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years in a nursing leadership position.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to guide, support, and manage teams, including overseeing performance evaluations to foster collaboration, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Familiarity with King’s College Hospital (KCH) policies and initiatives.
  • Resuscitation certification relevant to the specialty and evidence of ongoing Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Commitment to quality patient care through empathy, dignity, and adherence to protocols.
  • Ability to mentor and support junior team members effectively.
  • High level of confidentiality and discretion in handling sensitive information, ensuring compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for documentation and communication.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated with strong work standards; sets realistic goals and supports team objectives.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities in dynamic environments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage unexpected issues and escalate when necessary.
  • Maintains professional and personal credibility across all staff groups.
  • Demonstrates ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced setting.
