
Job Description
Collects blood from patient in the hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes.
- Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures
- . Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedur
- e. Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or b
- ag. Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent process
- ing. Performs bleeding times as ordered by physicians, taking care to limit the depth and length of the incision so as not to damage tissue unnecessa
- rily. Transports specimens in a timely manner form the collection areas of patient’s rooms to the Clinical Labor
- atory. Handles minor patients / donor’s reactions in a calm and orderly fashion but in a manner to prevent harm to the patient. Informs supervisor or work director of any patient rea
- ctions.Follow all safety and Infection Control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, when performing phlebotomy procedures and handling biological spe
- cimens. Assures that the work area is maintained in an orderly manner and is cleaned and disinfected regularly to avoid contam
- ination. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory perform phlebotomy procedures on patients of all age groups. These include
- neonatal. Working knowledge of Quality Control methods in assigned area and Quality Improvement program based on International Standard, e.g. JCIA standard, ISO 9000 Laboratory
- standards. Maintains patient confidentiality at
